The first time I saw the Venice Simplon Orient Express by Belmond, it felt like stepping into a dream a moving piece of history that embodies cinematic romance, craftsmanship, and timeless sophistication. The current train consists of meticulously restored 1920s and 1930s carriages each with its own story, wood-paneled charm, and art deco detailing. The VSOE runs several celebrated routes, including London–Venice, Paris–Istanbul (an annual journey), and seasonal alpine itineraries. Each route feels like a film set brought to life, with a rhythm and refinement that make time slow down.
The Journey Begins
Our journey began in Venice on the iconic Venice–Paris route. The Belmond team arranged a private boat transfer from our hotel to the station, a fittingly Venetian start. The check-in process was seamless, and the anticipation built as we stepped aboard.
We stayed in the Mont Blanc Twin Suite, which balanced Art Deco elegance with a modern comfort. Polished mahogany, soft lighting, and vintage upholstery set the tone. Each suite includes thoughtful touches private washbasins, cozy bedding that transforms into sofas by day, beautiful robes, and amenities from Officine Universelle Buly.

Although we spent just one night onboard, the experience felt immersive and complete. After a welcome toast with champagne and canapés, lunch was served in one of the elegant dining cars a setting of Lalique glass, crisp linens, and silver service. The menu, crafted by Chef Jean Imbert, celebrated the finest seasonal ingredients: handmade pasta, foie gras, and regional cheeses, each dish paired with wines selected to match the landscape rolling by.
The train steward, a defining feature of the experience, added a deeply personal touch. Assigned to each cabin, they handle everything luggage, bedding, breakfast service, and even dining reservations with the quiet professionalism that defines Belmond. Their care makes every moment feel seamless, personal, and indulgent.

Dinner on the Venice Simplon Orient Express is an event in itself. Guests dress for the occasion, and the ambiance transforms into something between a gala and a dream sequence. A live pianist played softly as the golden light reflected off polished wood and crystal. Between the rhythm of the rails and the murmur of conversation, the whole evening felt suspended in time.

Sleeping aboard was unexpectedly serene. The gentle sway of the train, the faint hum of the tracks, and the quiet comfort of the suite created a cocoon-like calm. For anyone who worries about rest on a moving train it’s surprisingly easy after an evening of fine dining, live music, and a final glass of champagne in the Bar Car.
Arrival in Paris
The next morning, we arrived in Paris in style. A farewell breakfast featuring caviar marked the perfect conclusion to our journey. From the station, a luxury transfer took us to our next destination, making the arrival as graceful as the departure.
